BORA activated charcoal filters – odours don’t stand a chance

BORA activated charcoal filters provide fresh air when cooking by eliminating unpleasant cooking odours. Learn about the most important features of the activated charcoal filter on your cooktop extractor system and find out why regular filter changes are so important.

What activated charcoal filters are for and how they work

BORA activated charcoal filters effectively eliminate odours in the recirculation models of our cooktop extractor systems. They clean the air that is drawn in before it is channelled back out into the room. This is one of the significant differences between recirculation and exhaust air models. In the case of the latter, odour filtering is superfluous. An activated charcoal filter is also used in the BORA X BO steam oven as a solution to ensure that no odours escape into the ambient air.

To do its job, activated charcoal has a highly porous texture. This gives it an extremely large inner surface on which odour molecules are deposited as the air flows through it. Once they have been trapped by the activated charcoal and filtered out, they can no longer be released back into the room. This is why activated charcoal filters are extremely effective at eliminating odours; however, only if they are not saturated.

As well as the activated charcoal filter itself, our BORA Basic activated charcoal filter also has an ion exchanger. This breaks down particularly stubborn odour particles, such as those from fish, and reliably neutralises them.

BORA activated charcoal filter installation and maintenance

In both new recirculation models of the BORA cooktop extractor systems and the BORA X BO steam oven, the necessary activated charcoal filter is pre-installed.

It must be changed when odours linger, extractor performance drops or the system indicates that the filter is saturated. In this case, an ‘F’ will appear in the fan level display on the BORA Basic, BORA Pure, BORA X Pure and BORA Professional. The Classic 2.0 system indicates that a filter change is necessary by showing ‘i FILT’ (20 hours of filter life remaining) and ‘E FILT’ (under 5 hours of filter life remaining).

We generally recommend changing the activated charcoal filter on a BORA cooktop after a specific number of operating hours. This prevents the restriction of functions. How often it needs to be changed depends on the system and the BORA activated charcoal filter used.

With the help of our step-by-step instructions, you can change BORA activated charcoal filters in a flash.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to clean a saturated BORA activated charcoal filter. This is not the case of the second type of filter used in the BORA cooktop extractor systems: grease filters can and must be cleaned regularly. Our guide shows you how to clean BORA filters.

How to dispose of old BORA activated charcoal filters and order a replacement

Disposing of used BORA activated charcoal filters is a piece of cake. Because the filters do not contain any hazardous substances, you can simply dispose of them in the household waste.

The easiest thing to do is to purchase a new BORA activated charcoal filter in our online shop. Alternatively, you can visit a BORA retail partner near you.

FAQs about BORA activated charcoal filters

BORA activated charcoal filters: how often do they need changing?

In the case of BORA Basic systems with the BORA activated charcoal filter set (BAKFS) and BORA Pure systems with BORA Pure activated charcoal filters (PUAKF), they need to be replaced every 150 operating hours. The same applies to the BORA X Pure activated charcoal filter, as this is also model PUAKF.

On our Classic and Professional systems, you have two options: the BORA air purification box flexible (ULBF) must be changed after 300 operating hours and the BORA air purification box with 3 activated charcoal cartridges (ULB3X) after 600 hours.

The X BO odour filter (XBOGF) on the BORA X BO steam oven lasts for 150 hours.

When is an activated charcoal filter required?

Recirculation models of our BORA cooktop extractor systems and our BORA X BO steam ovens are equipped with a BORA activated charcoal filter. It is essential in these products as otherwise odours will be released (back) into the room.

Where is the activated charcoal filter located?

On BORA Professional and BORA Classic models, the BORA activated charcoal filter can be accessed through a cover flap. This is either located under the cooktop or next to the ventilation system – you can find the exact position in the operating instructions of your BORA appliance. On the BORA Basic compact systems and in the BORA Pure range, the activated charcoal filter is in the centre of the cooktop beneath the air inlet opening.

Can activated charcoal filters be cleaned?

No. Activated charcoal filters cannot be cleaned. When the filter service life is up, they must be changed.
