Art déco – a timeless trend
The Roaring Twenties were famous for their extravagance, glamour and eclecticism. Read on to find out how the Great Gatsby lived and why this interior design style is still in fashion today. We also give you some practical tips on how to bring this style into your own four walls.
A celebration of beauty
The art déco style made its first major appearance at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, which took place in Paris in 1925. There, a group of artists expressed their desire to make everyday items decorative and aesthetically appealing. They incorporated almost all areas of daily life into their vision: from living and fashion to architecture.
Inspired by cubism and futurism, the roots of the new design language lay primarily in art nouveau – at least in terms of aesthetics. In contrast to this art style, however, the focus was not on craftsmanship here, as art déco items were produced by machine. This made them more affordable and accessible to a larger segment of the population.
An expression of sensuality and zest for life
The Roaring Twenties were named as such due to the economic boom between 1925 and 1929, accompanied by a golden age for art, culture and science. In the spirit of the exuberance of this time, art déco expresses the joy of individuality, beauty and sensuality.
This joy is reflected in geometric shapes and sharp angles, as well as stylised and flat representations of floral and organic motifs. Elegant shapes, precious materials and vibrant colours lend the style a particularly glamorous charm that is reminiscent of the lavish parties of the 1920s and remains totally trendy today.
A sophisticated style in your home
We come across the art déco look in furniture shops and on interior design blogs time and again. Here are a few tips to help you integrate some of this modern yet timeless flair into your home – and more precisely your kitchen:
- Furniture with clear, geometric shapes fits in perfectly with the 1920s style. These shapes can often be found on sideboards, rounded coffee tables and furniture with narrow legs. A kitchen can also be designed in art déco style, for example by applying tiles in geometrical patterns.
- Luxurious materials, such as velvet upholstery covers on living-room suites or drawer handles made of copper and gold, also play an important role.
- Vibrant colours, such as petrol blue or dark green, set strong accents as a wall colour and make a great impression, especially when teamed up with cream or pastel-coloured furniture or kitchen fronts.
- Art déco also stands for a love of decoration. Suitable accessories include geometric vases and mirrors with gold elements or stylish crystal bowls. With the right lighting – such as a round glass lampshade with a golden mounting – you can easily bring the art déco vibe into your own home.
Whether you opt for complete interior ensembles or individual accents and accessories: the art déco style gives your living space a touch of extravagance in the Gatsby style of the Roaring Twenties.
