Living in boho style

Unconventional combinations, natural materials and plenty of fringe trims – this is what makes up the boho style. But what exactly does ‘boho’ mean and why is this interior style so popular?

The boho lifestyle – completely casual

People in France were shocked when a movement began in the 19th century, whereby artists and intellectuals spoke out against financial prosperity and in favour of creative, free and unconventional lifestyles. What was once often pejoratively referred to as ‘hippiedom’ in the 60s and 70s is now seen as a casual style of living.

From home-made shelves to refurbished shabby-chic furniture and other unique flea market finds, to create a boho style you can combine items as you please, and when it comes to colours and shapes absolutely anything goes. With this style, creative individuals are in their element.

True to the spirit of 19th century Bohemianism, the boho style lends itself perfectly to creative mix-and-match combos: ethnic prints, cuddly cushions, snug blankets and fluffy rugs go hand in hand with natural wooden furniture, exotic house plants, holiday souvenirs and mirrors.

Versatile, natural and cosy

Boho is the exact opposite of the neat-yet-dull design of the conventional bourgeoisie. It means that rather than planning a uniform design for your home, you throw together a colourful collection of unique items and favourite pieces to create an incomparable atmosphere and a real sense of cosiness within your own four walls.

In boho style, you can create your own versatile and individual combinations with natural fabrics such as cotton and linen, rattan and a myriad of colours. While beige hues generally form the basis of the boho style, you can also add some bright splashes of colour, such as orange, red, purple, turquoise, blue, or even a colourful mix of all of the above.

The addition of numerous plants (which are a must for a true boho feel) helps to create a relaxed and natural atmosphere and turns your homely haven into an urban jungle. So, if you like to be surrounded by lush green plants, you can really go to town with the boho style. From exotic flowering plants to potted palms, anything goes to create a unique atmosphere.

An eye for details – a boho kitchen

With these interior design ideas, you can transform your cooking area into a cosy boho kitchen:

  • You can bring character pieces into your home with unusual furniture made of rattan, for example.
  • Colourful tiles or rugs can make your kitchen one of a kind.
  • Using some old wood you can knock up some shelves in next to no time where you can place fresh herbs, etc.
  • To create a cosy feel in the evenings you can string up some fairy lights or other warm white mood lights.
  • The boho style depends on plenty of decorative items. Here, more is more.

Why not combine some unique furnishings, stylish details and exotic house plants with some ultra-modern kitchen equipment? That way you can give free rein to your individuality and creativity.
