Cleaning your teppanyaki grill – keep your griddle sparkling clean

Grilling on hot iron: that’s a free translation of the term teppanyaki. This cooking method is increasing in popularity and not just in Japanese restaurants. On the hot stainless steel griddle, you can cook meat, fish and vegetables in a flash and at an even temperature. Thanks to the brief cooking time, food stays succulent and crisp – and retains vitamins and minerals. What’s more, a teppanyaki griddle only needs a little bit of oil and, as soon as patina has formed, you can even grill on it with no fat at all. You’ve enjoyed your meal; now it’s time to clean. How do you clean a teppanyaki grill and remove dirt with little effort?

Teppanyaki cleaning basics: how to go about it

On the BORA Tepan stainless steel grill, you cook food at temperatures between 70 and 250 °C. Two grilling zones enable you to cook different ingredients at the same time and keep them warm or to sear meat and at the same time gently cook vegetables over a lower heat. A BORA Tepan grill is also the ideal solution for winter barbecues: You can enjoy the cosy warmth of your own four walls whilst you cook crispy spare ribs, steaks, sausages and the like on the hotplate.

Cleaning the teppanyaki grill is just as easy as cooking on it. Thanks to the ultra-smooth stainless steel surface, you only need a few minutes to clean it. The practical BORA Tepan spatula can assist. With its help, you can gently remove food residues with no need for chemical cleaning products.

Good to know:cleaning the teppanyaki grill regularly extends its service life and guarantees delicious dishes every time. Over time, signs of use develop on the stainless steel surface. They by no means affect its function – quite the opposite. The patina makes the griddle unique. In many cases, the patina allows you to avoid the use of oil completely.

Instructions: cleaning your teppanyaki grill – how to make the griddle shine like new

Clean in a jiffy: to clean the teppanyaki grill, you just need a few minutes and the BORA Tepan cleaning function will help you too. Two steps to a sparkling clean griddle:

  • During preliminary cleaning, you remove food residues from the cooking zone.
  • Fine cleaning removes finer residues and ensures the grill is sparkling clean.

Did you know? The BORA Tepan cleaning function keeps the temperature constant at 70 °C – the ideal temperature for effective cleaning.

What steps do you need to take to clean the teppanyaki grill?

Preliminary cleaning:

  • Allow the griddle to cool to about 70 degrees or, if the griddle has cooled completely, heat it to that temperature with the BORA Tepan cleaning function. Tip: to do this set it to level C.
  • Gently remove large pieces of food and grease splashes with kitchen roll.
  • Allow burnt-on food residues to soak in water for a few minutes.
  • Then remove any stubborn residues with the Tepan spatula.

After preliminary cleaning come the details. You simply need a washing-up sponge and lemon juice, if you have it, diluted vinegar or diluted citric acid. Special cleaning products are not generally necessary.

Fine cleaning:

  • You can easily clean the teppanyaki grill with the rough side of the sponge. Tip: you can do this comfortably and effectively with the help of the Tepan spatula. Press the spatula onto the sponge and push it over the griddle in the direction of the grain.
  • Then remove the loosened residues with a soft, slightly damp dishcloth.
  • If you can still see dirt on the stainless steel plate, it’s time for round two. Here you put some lemon juice, citric acid or vinegar on the surface and leave it to work briefly.
  • Alternatively, you can use sparkling mineral water to remove stubborn residues.
  • You should now be able to remove even stubborn stains with the sponge or Tepan spatula.

Finally, bring the BORA Tepan stainless steel grill to a shine with a clean, slightly damp cloth.

Tips & tricks: cleaning the BORA Tepan made easy

Thanks to the integrated BORA Tepan cleaning function, you can gently clean the griddle in a flash. Our tips below will help you to maximise hygiene and extend the service life of your stainless steel grill:

  • Ideally, you should clean the teppanyaki grill after each use. At the latest, it’s time to clean it when food sticks to the plate and food does not cook evenly.
  • Avoid harsh, cleaning products containing alcohol, steel wool and metal pan cleaners. They can attack the stainless steel surface and scratch it.
  • Cleaning the teppanyaki cooktop may also make sense while you’re cooking. For instance, if you cook fish first and then want to make a dessert on the hotplate, it is recommendable to clean the surface after cooking the fish. This prevents the transfer of odours and flavours.

One final tip: if your BORA Tepan stainless steel grill is part of a BORA cooktop extractor system, it is also recommendable to regularly clean the filter. The grease filter on the following systems can conveniently be cleaned in the dishwasher:

  • BORA Professional 3.0
  • BORA Classic 2.0
  • BORA Basic, Pure, X Pure and S Pure

Bonus: the cover flaps, air inlet nozzles and maintenance trays are also dishwasher-safe.
